Great Outdoors Academy Expedition Journal:
the Next Generation Reflects on the Natural World
Calling all young writers, photographers, and artists! We want to publish your work.
The Expedition Journal gives you a chance to tell the world about your adventures, quiet reflections, or observations in the outdoors.
The Expedition Journal accepts submissions year-round from writers, photographers, and artists 19 years old and younger. Our mission is to publish work from the next generation of naturalists and adventurers. We want your best work, but don't worry if it's not perfect. The important thing is that you want to share your adventures with a wider audience.
You must be younger than 19 years of age to submit your work to The Expedition Journal.
All submissions:
We publish work in any genre, plus artwork, factual articles, and interviews. We'll publish something as short as 20 words or as long as 10,000 words, as long as it grabs us. The catch is that your work must address themes or issues around wilderness, nature, adventure, and your experience outdoors.
Suggestions for Submission: fiction, essays, reports from the field, interviews, poetry, comics, illustration, photography, painting, and experimental narrative.
What we want to hear about is your experience in nature and the outdoors. You may focus on a grand adventure, a moment of contemplation, a memorable camping/fishing/hunting trip-it doesn't matter, as long as the outdoors played a part.
If you are eager to contribute but short on ideas, let us know. If you send us a writing sample, we can give you a writing prompt, or assign something to you.
Just to give you an idea, here are the sections in which we are seeking contributors:
Trail Review: tell us about your favorite hike, river trip, bike trail, or whatever!
Photography: In each issue, we have a photography contest, as well as a special photography section. We might also use your photography in our section headers or in stories.
Artwork: Drawings, paintings, sketches, or digital art . . . whatever you have. Please send in digital form as outlined above.
Outdoor News: Tell us what's happening in your neck of the woods. Report local (or national) news items impacting the outdoors, recreation, and/or conservation.
Interview: find someone of any age who works or spends a lot of time in the outdoors, and has something interesting to say about it.
My Wild Youth: Adult writers recount a memorable outdoor experience from their youth. (NOTE: Material from adult writers is accepted by invitation only.)
Short story: fiction or non-fiction, if it grabs us, we'll print it.
Poetry: shorter is better, but we'll consider whatever you have.
Fashion/Gear Review: Is there a piece of clothing or equipment that has served you well on your adventures? Tell us about it.
Great Outdoors Academy will have first world electronic and print rights, and we will have the right to archive the work indefinitely. Authors and artists will retain the right to publish their work elsewhere six months after publication in The Expedition Journal.
